Scoposcopy: Supplement: Digital Artifacts on Rigol DS1054Z

Here’s a neat display of interesting patterns resulting from digital artifacts.

The signal from a simple VCO using the CD4046 Phase Locked Loop chip makes a wonderful display when the scope is set “incorrectly”.

Certainly something is being detected and displayed in the patterns…. the signal is quite sensitive to stuff moving around near the air-core coil which is being driven at its resonant frequency by the Voltage Controlled Oscillator in the PLL chip.

I’m not actually using the phase lock function of the chip, just the internal VCO.

The interesting flowing patterns of dots are artifacts of digital sampling rate, time base, display style and persistence, etc.

Thanks for watching !
