Beach Rock Cell.

This shows a voltaic cell that is made using a quartz rock as the seperator between two dissimilar metals. The rock was found at a local beach and is smooth but porous. The rock was moistened with water and then dried off with a towel before this experiment. Water remained within the porous crystaline rock structure to allow the cell to function. With the rock totally dry the cell does not function.
